A Compact Fluorescent Lamp, referred to as a CFL, is designed to be used in place of a regular incandescent light bulb in a standard light fixture socket. Compared to ordinary light bulbs CFL’s provide the equivalent amount of visible light and consume less power while offering a longer useful life. CFL’s can save annually about $30 in electricity costs and will last up to 10 times longer than a regular light bulb. Today CFL’s are offered in wide variety of shapes and sizes to replace most types of lamps. Like all fluorescent lamps, CFL’s do contain a minimal amount of mercury so you will need to dispose of them properly. We have made arrangements with Mercury Technologies of Minnesota, Inc. to recycle expired CFL’s, so you may return your used CFL’s to us for collection. Every year more than 350,000 homes are struck by fire. By following a few easy steps you can help reduce the chances of a blaze damaging your home or injuring a loved one. Having smoke & carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers properly placed on each level of your home can be the single most important practice you can follow. The detectors should be tested and cleaned monthly and have their battery replaced at least once a year. Be sure the pressure gauge on the fire extinguishers are monitored monthly for proper levels. Matches, lighters and flammable chemicals should be safely stored and out of reach of children. Never overload an electrical outlet and keep any space heaters away from furniture and curtains. Be sure the lint screen on the clothes dryer is cleaned and the filters on your furnace are changed regularly. Homes with more than one story should also have an escape ladder. A recent article in the newspaper states that when a consumer spends $100 in a neighborhood business it creates $68 in additional local economic activity; while spending $100 in a national chain store only produces $43 worth of local impact. The article goes on further to explain that the largest components of local spending are: Wages and benefits paid to local employees; goods and services purchased from other local businesses, philanthropic business contributions to local causes & events, and taxes paid to state and local governments.
With all of us looking for new ways to control spending, stretch our budgets and live within our means, it just makes sense to spend what we must where it will do the most good. We as local merchants must continue to strive to earn your loyalty by providing the best value for your spending dollar.
