A recent article in the newspaper states that when a consumer spends $100 in a neighborhood business it creates $68 in additional local economic activity; while spending $100 in a national chain store only produces $43 worth of local impact. The article goes on further to explain that the largest components of local spending are: Wages and benefits paid to local employees; goods and services purchased from other local businesses, philanthropic business contributions to local causes & events, and taxes paid to state and local governments.
